This kind of so called "alentours" tapestries first appears during the reign of Louis XV. Mostly decorative, they fit perfectly in rococo interiors. One of the famous example is the Story of Don Quichotte, woven at the Gobelins after cartoons by Coypel.
The cartoon of our tapestry has been made by Jean-Baptiste Huet. Very popular under the reign of Louis XVI, Huet is also famous as ornemental painter. This piece melts ornament and genre scene with elegance and balance.
A similar tapestry, with identical oval medallions is reproduced in Chevalier and Bertrand's book about Aubusson and Felletin tapestries.
